maintenance of leather

Just like wood, leather is a natural material.

Pilat&Pilat works with an aniline leather (sheep’s leather) and a semi-aniline leather (cowhide). Aniline leather is a type of leather that has been completely coloured with aniline dyes in a barrel. This smooth leather has open pores and has no pigment layer (colour layer) on the upper side so that the natural texture of the hide is still recognisable. It is the most natural type of leather. A drop of water on the surface of aniline leather penetrates the leather, causing a dark patch as the pores of the leather have not been sealed. Aniline leather is very sensitive to water and grease patches, as well as to discolouration due to sunlight. Aniline leather feels warm and waxy to the touch and has a mat appearance.

Aniline leather has to be treated with the necessary care, with the recommendations closely resembling those of solid wood:

• Never place furniture in direct sunlight. Sunlight will affect the colour.
• As leather can dry out, do not place the furniture too close to a heat source. We recommend a relative humidity of between 50% and 60% in your home.
• Only use maintenance agents that are suitable for use on the upholstery of your furniture. Solvents, stain removers, acetone, benzene, white spirit, shoe polish, etc. are clearly not suitable.
• Take care with pets, sharp items on clothing, shoe buckles, Velcro, belts and jewellery. These can damage the leather.
• Creasing is normal.

All pieces of furniture that have been upholstered with aniline leather are treated after production at Pilat&Pilat with a leather protector. This leather protector protects against accidents involving water, oil or grease. We have this maintenance product in stock.
